Anxiety, in a nutshell, is like having a monkey on your back that won't stop chattering. Some of the effects of anxiety is that constant feeling of worry, imaginary doubting voices, and sometimes even a numbing fear that pops up at the most inconvenient times. 


Anxiety is a common condition that affects many people, and it can manifest in various ways. Remember that everyone's experience with anxiety is different, and it's important to seek professional help if it starts affecting your everyday life. It's essential to provide support and understanding to individuals dealing with anxiety. If you can see it, you don't have to be it! Accepting and being real about your own tendencies to get caught up in worry is often the first step to anxiety relief.


Overcoming anxiety is possible if you are open to looking at it, learning about the effects of anxiety it and techniques to overcome it.


Here are some common signs that someone may be experiencing anxiety:-


  • Racing thoughts: Have you ever felt like your brain has hit the fast forward button? With anxiety, those thoughts just keep zooming by, making it hard to concentrate, relax, or show significant progress on a project.
  • Restlessness and irritability: As if anxiety wasn't annoying enough already, it tends to make people feel antsy and on the edge. This can lead to irritability, which can affect both the person experiencing anxiety and those around them. Mild irritability can even lead to full scale agitation as small things suddenly become overwhelming.
  • Physical symptoms: Anxiety can also manifest in physical ways, such as increased heart rate, sweaty palms, shortness of breath, or even stomach aches, muscle tension, headaches. It's like your body's way of saying - "Hey, something isn't right here!"
  • Avoidance Behaviour: Sometimes people with anxiety will start avoiding situations or places that trigger their discomfort and fears. Avoiding all potential stressors can interfere with daily activities or lead to social withdrawal.
  • Overthinking: You know that friend who always over-analyzes everything? Well anxiety takes that to a whole new level. People with anxiety often finds themselves trapped in a cycle of overthinking and imagining worst-case scenarios.
  • Excessive worry: Feeling anxious often involves persistent and excessive worrying about various aspects of life. Even dreading imagined outcomes of future events.
  • Difficulty concentrating: When anxiety kicks in it, it can be difficult to focus on tasks or maintain clarity of mind. This can lead to decreased productivity and increased frustration.
  • Sleep problems: Many people with anxiety struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep. Racing thoughts or a constant state of worry can make it difficult to achieve a restful night's sleep.

Helpful Habits Someone can Install on their Own to Overcome Anxiety

Dealing with anxiety can be challenging, but anxiety relief simply starts with understanding the effects of anxiety. There are several helpful habits you can develop to ease your worries, overcoming anxiety, and find some peace of mind. Here are a few suggestions:


1. Deep Breathing: Take a moment to focus on your breath. Inhale slowly through your nose, hold it briefly, and exhale through your mouth. This simple technique helps activate your body's relaxation response.


2. Exercise Regularly: Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which boost your mood and reduce stress. Whether it's jogging, dancing, or even just going for a walk, find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.


3. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness involves being fully present in the current moment, paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Engaging in activities like meditation or yoga can help you cultivate mindfulness and lower anxiety levels.


4. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake: Both caffeine and alcohol can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. Consider reducing your consumption of these substances, as they can interfere with your sleep patterns and increase feelings of anxiousness.


5. Get Sufficient Sleep: Lack of quality sleep can amplify anxiety. Establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine to ensure you get enough restorative sleep each night.


6. Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself spiraling into negative thinking patterns, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself if they are realistic or grounded in evidence. Replace negative thoughts with positive or neutral alternatives to cultivate a more balanced perspective.


7. Cultivate a Support System: Surround yourself with supportive and understanding people who can provide a listening ear or offer a different perspective. Opening up about your worries can help alleviate some of the burden.

No Shame in Asking for Support

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the effects of anxiety in your life, let me tell you something - there is absolutely no shame in asking for support. None whatsoever! In fact, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.


First off, anxiety is no joke. It can make even the simplest tasks seem daunting and overwhelming. So, reaching out for support shows that you are self-aware and proactive about taking care of your mental well-being. It's like saying, "Hey, I recognize this feeling, and I want to address it before it gets too big."


Secondly, humans are social creatures! We thrive on connections and interactions with others. Asking for support allows us to tap into the power of community and surround ourselves with people who genuinely care. Whether it's a trusted friend, a family member, or a professional, having someone in your corner can provide comfort and reassurance during those anxious moments on your way to overcoming anxiety.


Additionally, seeking support during anxiety allows you to gain different perspectives and strategies for managing it. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh set of eyes or a helpful suggestion to ease your worries. Plus, talking it out helps you release those pent-up emotions, making room for more positive vibes in your life.


Lastly, remember that we all face challenges at some point in our lives. Anxiety is incredibly common, and chances are, people around you have experienced it too. By opening up about your struggles, you create an atmosphere that encourages others to do the same, fostering empathy, understanding, and a sense of unity.


So, my dear friend, if anxiety comes knocking at your door, don't hesitate to ask for support. It's a brave and wise choice that can lead you towards brighter days and a lighter heart. And remember, you're never alone in this journey.
